Wow! It was a very busy week in the 2/3 community. Homecoming week was a huge success! Thank you for all of your help with supporting the dress up days, dime wars, and the homecoming parade.
3rd Grade Teachers J This week : Reading –This week in reading we finished our unit on visualizing. However students should always visualize when reading even though we will now begin another comprehension unit on inferences. We began our inferring unit with the book The Paper Bag Princess. Students focused on the main character Elizabeth, explaining what she is like and how she changes throughout the story. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words floppy, recall, clatter, disaster, celebration, and retrieve from the book Aunt Flossie's Hats and Crab Cakes Later. Writing – This week in writing we finished up our skills study of complete, compound, and complex sentences. Students will return to working on the process of editing their pieces for publishing to the final draft phase. Students worked with partners to proofread for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Students can use dictionaries to help themselves at this point. Math – This week in math students ended Unit 1 on Multiplication and Division, and are moving on to Unit 2 Modeling with Data. In this new unit, students will explore how to classify and organize data. This week we focused on collecting data on Places We Like To… In this exercise, students wrote about favorite places they like to read, play and visit. Then we analyzed the data to look for patterns. Next Week : Reading – Next week students will continue to learn about making inferences about characters when reading. Writing – Next week students will finish publishing their final drafts, and will share their writing in the Author's Chair. Math – Next week we’ll continue to explore new data and analyzing it.

We have had an amazing week in the 2/3 community!
Reading - This week we used the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Too) to practice visualizing while we read. Students made drawings of what they heard read aloud to them. We talked about which words helped them visualize what exactly was happening in the story. In addition to our whole class lessons, we started book clubs this week and reading groups. Every third grade reader has been assigned to a book club or reading group based on their specific level and need for support. Those groups are shared among all of the third grade teachers as well as Mrs. Flavin and our intern Ms. Ross. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words flutter, clutch, dodge, heartbreaking, fury, and bewildered from The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock. Writing – This week in writing students revised their opening sentences in the piece they are revising. We also wrote titles and learned how to underline and capitalize correctly when writing titles. We spent a few days focusing on writing skills which will help us revise and edit our pieces. We learned about complete sentences, incomplete sentences and compound sentences. Math - This week in math we worked on writing our own division and multiplication word problems, and then having our peers try to solve them. In addition, we learned a new game called Missing Factors. This game can be played at home as well. Next week - Reading – Next week we will begin a new unit focused on the strategy of making inferences while reading. Writing – Next week we will learn about complex sentences and students will begin to edit their pieces for final publishing. Math – Next week we will learn about analyzing and collecting data. We are so glad that families made it through Hurricane Irma. The teachers and students enjoyed the chance to try to get things back to normal Thursday and Friday. Mr. Marrin informed us that 10 spots are still available in his Friday art club. Please go to his class page at http://pkyonge.ufl.edu/academics/class-pages/elementary-school/art/ for a signup form. Please let us know if there is anything you need as we continue to recover from Hurricane Irma.

We learned that the words in the text combined with our imaginations help us make pictures, or movies, in our minds while we read. Teachers are conferencing with students to determine their use of visualizing, fluency, and overall comprehension of the independent reading texts. Vocabulary- using the book Two Bobbies we learned the words bustle, volunteer, debris, devastate, ruckus, and lounge. Writing: Using the non-fiction books Atlantic and Oceans and Seas, students looked at different structures that can be used in non-fiction writing. In addition, the book Atlantic showed students about personification, where they write from the point of view of an inanimate object using I at the beginning of their sentences. Students explored this technique in their own writing. Teachers continue to conference with students individually. Math: This week we continued to practice and talk about multiplication through the use of arrays. Students are making array cards in order to help them practice their facts and products during class. Continued practice of multiplication facts is recommended, especially on days when there’s no HW. Next Week: Reading: Students will continue to practice visualizing while reading to support comprehension. Writing: Next week we begin the next unit which focuses on the writing process, which involves choosing a piece to take to publication and how to do that. Math: Next week we will finish up our array cards and continue to practice multiplication by playing array games. In addition, we’ll introduce finding the area of rectangles. |
