This week: Reading – This week students practiced making inferences about the main character in the book The Paper Bag Princess. We talked about how all characters face problems and work to solve them. We learn about the characters by understanding their actions as they face and solve problems. Often an author gives us clues about a character through their actions and dialogue. When we understand a character well we can predict what he/she will do. This is the power of inferences. Vocabulary - We learned the words disaster, celebration, and retrieve from the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Too!). We also learned the words unfortunate, fortunate, and immense from the book The Paper Bag Princess. Writing – This week students worked hard to publish and share their first pieces. You will see these later in the year when we have our Literary Celebration Party. Students worked to edit their pieces for complete sentences, punctuation, and spelling. Each child had a turn to read his/her piece in the “Author’s Chair.” This is an opportunity for other students to get ideas from each other and support each other’s efforts. Math – This week in math students learned how to make and interpret line plots. We discussed the terms mode, range, and outlier. Students also began an investigation about collecting and analyzing measurement data. For example, students all measured how long one of their feet is and we talked about the class data and what it means. Next week - Reading – Next week students will make character webs to help them make inferences. Writing – Next week we will have a few more skills lessons focused on nouns, adjectives, and pronouns. Math – Next week students will begin our next unit on addition and subtraction strategies using 3-digit numbers. Homework: Monday – math page 54, Tuesday – math page 56, Wednesday – math page 57, Thursday – math page 2

This week - Reading –This week in reading we finished our unit on visualizing. Students should always visualize when reading, even though we will now begin another comprehension unit on inferences. We began our inferencing unit with the book The Paper Bag Princess. Students focused on the main character Elizabeth, explaining what she is like and how she changes throughout the story. Students also took an assessment this week to give us some baseline data about their test taking strategies. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words heartbreaking, fury, and bewildered from the book The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock as well as floppy, recall, and clatter from the book Aunt Flossie's Hats and Crab Cakes Later. Writing – This week in writing we finished up our skills study of complete, compound, and complex sentences. Students will use these skills to edit their pieces next week. Math – This week in math students finished their double bar graphs to represent the data they collected from two different classes. Students are practicing describing data with terms such as “almost all, very few, half, or more than half.” Next week - Reading – Next week students will continue to learn about making inferences about characters when reading. Writing – Next week students will finish publishing their first pieces and will share their writing in the Author's Chair. Math – Next week we will work with line plots as a way to show data. We will also explore measurement and data we collect from measuring different lengths. This Week: This week - Reading - This week we used the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Too) to practice visualizing while we read. Students made drawings of what they heard read aloud to them. We talked about which words helped them visualize what exactly was happening in the story. In addition to our whole class lessons, we started book clubs this week and reading groups. Every third grade reader has been assigned to a book club or reading group based on their specific level and need for support. Those groups are shared among all of the third grade teachers as well as Mrs. Flavin and our intern Ms. Wendland. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words utter, whoop, and plop from the poem “Seal,” as well as the words flutter, clutch, and dodge from The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock. Writing – This week in writing students revised their opening sentences in the piece they are revising. We also wrote titles and learned how to underline and capitalize correctly when writing titles. We started focusing on writing skills which will help us revise and edit our pieces. We learned about complete sentences. Math - This week in math we started unit 2 which focuses on surveys and line plots. We worked to make graphs to represent data we collected. Students learned about bar graphs and double bar graphs. Double bar graphs are a powerful tool in comparing data from two different groups. To help students practice this each class is developing a research question, for which they will collect data about that question from themselves, and then collected data about it from another class. Students will then work to make a double bar graph to represent what we learn. Next week - Reading – Next week we will begin a new unit focused on the strategy of making inferences while reading. Writing – Next week we will learn about complex sentences and students will begin to edit their pieces for final publishing. Math – Next week we will learn about line plots as another way to represent data. Homework Monday – math page 17 Tuesday – math page 18 Wednesday – math page 20 Thursday – math page 24 Dear Families,
It has been a busy week in the 2/3 Community even with a short week due to Hurricane Hermine. Thank you all so much for coming to the Elementary Open House. We enjoyed seeing so many families. If you were unable to join us, a copy of the power point was sent home and is now posted on our Weebly site under parent resources. We had our first building day for Caine’s Arcade on Wednesday. Please continue to send in materials for your child. We have two more constructions days on the 14th and 21st. We also had our first lockdown drill in 2/3 working with the 4/5 community. We were so proud of all of the students. As always if you should have any questions or concerns please let us know.

We learned that the words in the text combined with our imaginations help us make pictures, or movies, our minds while we read. Teachers are conferencing with students to determine their use of visualizing, fluency, and overall comprehension of the independent reading texts. Vocabulary: Using the book Two Bobbies we learned the words bustle, volunteer, debris, devastate, ruckus, and lounge. Writing: Using the books Atlantic and I Wonder Why the Sea is Salty students looked at different structures that can be used in non-fiction writing. In addition, the book Hello Ocean showed students how to include sensory details in their writing to make it more interesting. The book In November is another great example of including sensory details to describe a particular season. Students explored this technique in their own writing. Teachers continue to conference with students individually. Math: This week we continued to practice and talk about our strategies for choosing two 2-digit numbers that, when added together, get close to 100. We also learned a new game called “Make a Dollar” in which students find different combinations of coins that equal a dollar when added together. Next Week: Reading: Students will continue to practice visualizing while reading to support comprehension. Writing: Next week we begin the next unit which focuses on the writing process, which involves choosing a piece to take to publication and how to do that. Math: Next week we will finish this first unit and then begin the second unit which will focus on recording and interpreting data. Math Homework will be sent home: Beginning next week, students will have a Reading Log. Please support your child in reading and recording at least 80 minutes each week.
