We have had an amazing week in the 2/3 community!
Reading - This week we used the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (And Crab Cakes Too) to practice visualizing while we read. Students made drawings of what they heard read aloud to them. We talked about which words helped them visualize what exactly was happening in the story. In addition to our whole class lessons, we started book clubs this week and reading groups. Every third grade reader has been assigned to a book club or reading group based on their specific level and need for support. Those groups are shared among all of the third grade teachers as well as Mrs. Flavin and our intern Ms. Ross. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words flutter, clutch, dodge, heartbreaking, fury, and bewildered from The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock. Writing – This week in writing students revised their opening sentences in the piece they are revising. We also wrote titles and learned how to underline and capitalize correctly when writing titles. We spent a few days focusing on writing skills which will help us revise and edit our pieces. We learned about complete sentences, incomplete sentences and compound sentences. Math - This week in math we worked on writing our own division and multiplication word problems, and then having our peers try to solve them. In addition, we learned a new game called Missing Factors. This game can be played at home as well. Next week - Reading – Next week we will begin a new unit focused on the strategy of making inferences while reading. Writing – Next week we will learn about complex sentences and students will begin to edit their pieces for final publishing. Math – Next week we will learn about analyzing and collecting data.
