A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This week - Reading – This week in reading we read Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. We were able to compare and contrast to the previous book we had read Boundless Grace. We also read the book The Raft by Jim LaMarche. This is a lovely story about a boy who changes quite a bit during a summer visit to his grandmother’s house. It offer opportunities for students to notice how a character changes from the beginning of a story to the end. Vocabulary – This week students learned the words particularly, speechless, reunite, cross, savory, and realize from the book Boundless Grace. Writing – This week in writing students learned how to use temporal words to help their reader understand the order of what is happening in their personal narratives. Students also selected their favorite personal narrative from this unit in order to prepare it for publishing. We began to work through revisions this week. Math – This week in math students continued to work on strategies for adding 3-digit numbers. They also took an assessment to demonstrate their mastery of understanding the value of 3-digit numbers and adding and subtracting with 3-digit numbers. Finally, students learned a new game, "Capture On the 300 Chart" in which students add and subtract with numbers up to 300. Next week - Reading - Next week we will continue to practice the reading comprehension strategy of making inferences about characters while reading. Writing – Next week we will revise our opening and closing sentences in our personal narrative to make sure they are strong and engaging. Math – Next week students will continue to practice adding and subtracting with 3-digit numbers. Homework Monday: math page 46 Tuesday: math page 51 Wednesday: there will be no math homework because of Wacky Wednesday Thursday: math page 53

It has been another busy week in the 2/3 community!
--2/3 teachers Reading – This week in reading we focused on how a character changes from the beginning to the end of a story. We studied Grace, the main character in the books Boundless Grace and Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. Students made their own character webs about Grace. Vocabulary – This week we learned the words doubtful, nifty, ghastly, dazzle, quiver, and command from the book Julius, The Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes. Writing – This week in writing we are working to learn about and write our own personal narratives. Students heard several examples of personal narratives and are working on their own. Students are including sensory details to make their writing more interesting and vivid. Students have written about chores, exciting incidents from their lives, and first day of school stories. Math – This week in math students worked to bring in items for their class collection. Through our tracking our progress toward getting 1,000 items, students are practicing addition with 3-digit numbers as well as gaining a visual understanding of how many tens are in 3-digit numbers. We also worked to round numbers and to write them in expanded form. Finally, we started to use the "break apart" strategy to add 3-digit numbers. Next week - Reading – Next week we will continue to make inferences about characters in our reading. Writing – Next week we will continue to explore and practice writing personal narratives. Math – Next week we will continue to work on strategies for adding and ordering 3-digit numbers. Homework Monday – math page 33 Tuesday – math page 37 Wednesday – no homework because of Wacky Wednesday Thursday – math page 42 Also for homework each week, students should turn in a Homeside activity and a reading log with at least 80 minutes of reading each Monday. It has been another busy week in the 2/3 community!
Reading – This week in reading we took a break from our regular curriculum to administer our CBM assessments. CBM stands for “Curriculum Based Measure.” We use the Gates-MacGinite reading assessment because it is nationally normed and allows us to understand how our students are doing compared to third graders around the country. We also use the AIMS math assessments to get a picture of how our students are doing with math concepts, also compared with students around the country. We will be sharing these results with you at our upcoming parent-teacher conferences. We did not have vocabulary lessons this week because of the time needed to administer our CBM assessments. Writing - We started our next unit which will focus on the genre of personal narrative. We read the books Grandma's Records and Our House to see examples of this to help students get ideas. Students will all be working to write personal narratives during this unit. We want to encourage our students to include sensory details when writing their personal narratives. Math – This week we started a new unit focused on addition and subtraction with 3-digit numbers. We began by building 1,000s charts. We also learned a new game called "Go Collecting" which allows students to practice adding 3-digit numbers together. Finally, students chose an item on Friday to collect for our class collection. Each class may have chosen a different item; ask your child what he/she needs to bring in. As students bring in items we will bag them in tens and hundreds. Through watching and counting as this collection grows, students learn how many tens are in 3-digit numbers, which is an important learning goal in this unit. For example, students need to understand that in the number 310 there are 31 tens. Next week - Reading – Next week students will continue to practice making inferences with a new text, Boundless Grace. Writing – Next week we will continue to explore personal narratives by working to include sensory details. Math – Next week we continue our work in this unit by learning how to round and write numbers in expanded form. Homework Next Week: Monday – math page 19 Tuesday – math page 21 Wednesday – math page 22D Thursday – math page 24 Also, remember 80 minutes are due for the reading log each Monday. Additionally, there is a “Homeside” activity due each Monday. You will find “Homeside” activities in the blue folders. Wow! What a week in the 2/3 Community!
--2/3 teachers This week - Reading – This week in reading students continued to practice making inferences about characters through our work with the book Julius, The Baby of the World. The main character, Lilly, changed greatly from the beginning of the book to the end. We studied why and how she changed. The author writes clues for us to do this work and we talked together as we decided about how and why Lilly changed. Students helped make a character web to record the characteristics of Lilly. Then students worked to make inferences in their own independent reading books. Vocabulary – We learned the words fierce, magnificent, and ungrateful from the book The Paper Bag Princess. We also learned the words doubtful, nifty, and ghastly from the book Julius, The Baby of the World. Writing – This week in writing students learned a few more writing skills: singular and plural nouns, common and proper nouns, adjectives, and pronouns. These will help the students as they begin the next unit on personal narratives. Math – This week students practiced their measurement skills measuring things like their own foot, how far they can blow a pattern block, how far they can jump, and how long a side of the classroom is. We used this data to make graphs and draw conclusions. Students also learned how to create and interpret pictographs. Finally, students took a unit assessment on our data unit as well as a pre-assessment for our next unit which will focus on addition and subtraction strategies. We will use the results of the pre-assessment to better support students as we work through the unit. Next week - Reading – Next week students will continue to practice making inferences with a new text, Boundless Grace. Writing – Next week we will continue to explore personal narratives by working to include sensory details. Math – Next week students will begin our next unit on addition and subtraction strategies using 3-digit numbers.
