Reading: This week we read a moving story called Two Bobbies. It was a nonfiction account of a dog and cat who were left behind during Hurricane Katrina. Students talked in depth with their partners and the class to understand the story. In independent reading, students focused on making sure the books they have chosen are at their level. Students practiced using self-monitoring questions to know if the books are at their level. Students also learned how to record completed books in their reading log at school.
Vocabulary: From the book Miss Nelson is Missing we learned the words whiz, squirm, rap, snap, likely, and unlikely. Writing: This week we looked at different genres from anchor texts and students were invited to try their hand at these genres during writing time. We looked at memoir through the book Things Will Never Be the Same by Tomie de Paola, acrostic poems through Silver Seeds, and nonfiction through Oceans and Seas. Students also did a few “Quick Writes” during which students try to write to a prompt for five minutes straight without stopping. Math: This week in math we learned some new games which help students practice important strategies for adding and subtracting and place value. The first game we learned was ”Collect $2.00” during which students collect pennies and dimes, trading them when possible to make $2.00. Working with pennies and dimes supports students’ developing skills with ones and tens. We also continued to talk about how to find the difference between a 2-digit number and 100. We us unmarked number lines to help show and find the difference. On Friday we learned a new game called “Close to 100” in which students have to choose numbers to make two 2-digit numbers which when added together will get them as close to 100 as possible. Next Week: Reading: Next week students will begin to practice using the reading strategy of visualizing to help understand what they are reading. Writing: Next week we will continue to focus on helping students get ideas for writing and to write freely about what interests them. Math: Next week we will learn how to estimate the sum of two 2-digit numbers to determine if they are more or less than 100. Students learn how to do this with mental math, considering how many tens and then how many ones are made. We will also work to make different coin combinations for $1.00. Math Homework will be sent home: Monday - page 44; Tuesday- page 47-48; Thursday- page 50
