A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading we had our first two FSA simulations on Tuesday and Thursday. Students worked for 45 minutes on two passages each day. After the test simulation we worked to go over all of the answers with the students right then so they could reflect on their success and difficulties. Students will graph their progress for all six simulations. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words vertical, horizontal, and tip. Writing: This week in writing we studied several examples of non-fiction texts. The students saw different ways to organize a nonfiction text, such as by chapters, by alphabet, by telling the story of one animal, by imagining being an animal. Students also spent a lot of time looking through nonfiction texts to discover how they are organized but to also try to learn from them. Students are thinking about what animal they are curious about. They are getting ready to start a big research project on one animal and it should be one they are very interested in. Math: This week in math students explored how division is the inverse operation to multiplication. Students played a new game called "Missing Factor," in which a friend covered up a factor of an array and students had to determine the other factor (for example, students would see one factor is 2 and the product is 18, so the other factor is 9). Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will continue to practice the strategy of asking questions while reading non-fiction. We will also have one FSA simulation. Writing: Next week in writing students will continue to learn about writing non-fiction. Math: Next week in math we will finish our unit on multiplication and division and begin our unit on fractions. Homework: Monday: Math page 48 Tuesday: Math page 49 Wednesday: math page 50 Thursday: math page 3

A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading students learned about functional texts. Functional texts are signs or flyers we use often to gather important information, such as street signs, maps, lunch menus, etc. We talked about how to read and learn from these texts. Additionally, students read a functional text called, "How to Make a Paper Airplane." We discussed how to learn from an instructional text such as this. At recess some students elected to put their new knowledge to the test by making their own paper airplanes. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words hazardous, convenient, and detect from the book Homes. We also learned the words graceful, spectacular, and original from the text "Origami: The Art of Japanese Paper Folding." Writing: This week in writing we finished our performance task. For this opinion piece students researched George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Then students wrote a persuasive piece about which man they would prefer to meet if they could travel back in time. Students used reasons from their research to convince the reader they had chosen the better man. We also started our next unit which will focus on writing non-fiction expository texts. Math: This week in math students learned the connection between multiplication and arrays. This will allow students to discover the inverse relationship in multiplication that 2 x 4 = 8 and 4 x 2 = 8. Students worked to make posters to represent all the different arrays for different numbers. This lays the ground work for discovering multiples, factors, and prime numbers. Students also made sets of array cards, which will help students begin to commit facts to memory. Next Week: Reading: Next week we will begin a new unit on asking questions while reading non-fiction. Writing: Next week in writing students will continue to learn about writing non-fiction. Math: Next week in math we will continue our focus on multiplication. A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading we read some non-fiction articles to explore the text features and how they can help us understand what we are reading. We read "Hop to It: Fancy Footwork," which is about the history of hop-scotch. We also read "Origami: The Art of Japanese Paper Folding," which explained the history of and current status of origami. Students looked at illustrations and text boxes to learn more from the article. Finally, we read “Jump Rope: Then and Now” to practice using text features as well. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words plain, differ, and refreshing from the book Morning Meals Around the World. From the book Homes we learned secure, durable, and texture. Writing: This week in writing students finished, published, and shared their final persuasive essay. We also began our second writing performance task. These are designed to help students read texts, comprehend them, analyze them, and then write to a prompt during which they must refer to the information learned in the texts. This helps prepare them for state writing assessments in fourth grade. This performance task will be in the genre of opinion writing, which we just finished studying. Math: This week in math we continued our study of multiplication and division. We looked at the relationship between multiples of related numbers. For instance, if you know the multiples of 3 well, they will help you with the multiplies of 6 as they are doubled. Students are working to know their multiples accurately. If you know 7 x 3 = 21, then you would know 7 x 6 = 42 because 42 is double 21. Next Week: Reading: Next week we will continue to look at text features in non-fiction texts. Writing: Next week in writing students will work through an opinion writing task. Math: Next week in math we will continue our focus on multiplication. |
