A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading students continued to practice asking questions while reading non-fiction text. We continued to work through the text Polar Bears. Additionally, we had our last two FSA simulation tests. After spring break, it is time for the real thing. We have worked hard and we are as ready as can be. Please help your child read some over spring break, just for fun. Thank you for all of your support in helping us get ready. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words disrupt, trample, and forbid from the book Desert. Writing: This week in writing students worked with their partners to draft and revise their non-fiction research piece. Students worked to include transitional words to help the reader learn from their writing. Students also revised their openings and closings to be interesting and helpful to a reader. Math: – This week in math students continued their work with fractions. We used pattern blocks to prove different equivalencies. Students played a new game, "The Fraction Cookie Game" in which they practiced using fraction equivalencies to make and trade fractional parts to make whole cookies. Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will have our two days of FSA testing. Writing: Next week in writing students will continue to learn about writing non-fiction. Math: Next week in math we will continue to study fractions. Homework: There will be no homework to help students rest up for the FSA.

--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading students continued to ask questions while reading non-fiction texts. We also read a new text, Polar Bears, with which students could practice using schema to think about a topic. This means that before reading a book, students think about all they know about the topic. This helps the brain prepare for learning new information. Students also asked questions throughout reading this new book to track their understanding of the book and enhance their comprehension. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words adapt, depend, and scan from the book Deserts. Writing: This week in writing students finished taking their notes on index cards for their non-fiction research project on their chosen animal. Students also sorted their note cards into topics to help them start to organize the information before beginning to write their piece. Students will use the categories to start to form their own chapters and paragraphs in their own books they are now ready to draft. Math: – Students explored different fractions and how to order them from smallest to largest. Students also learned that each fraction may look different depending on how you choose to divide a whole or depending on the shape of the whole. We also worked to be able to place different fractions in order on a number line. This skill will be important in understanding equivalent fractions. Students also divided groups of objects into fractional parts, such as finding 1/3 of 12 apples. Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will continue to practice the strategy of asking questions while reading non-fiction. We will also have one FSA simulation. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: In our curriculum we continued to practice asking questions to help us understand non-fiction texts such as Explore the Desert, by Kay Jackson. Students stopped while reading to record and discuss questions. As they discussed their questions students deepened their understanding of what they were learning from the text. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words flashy, fantastic, diverse, avoid, deadly, and threatened from the book Flashy, Fantastic, Rainforest Frogs. Writing: This week students began their research on the animal they chose with their partners. Each pair has books from the library and also used iPads or Chromebooks to complete some internet searches to find answers to questions they had about their animal. Students also learned how to take notes on index cards. Teachers modeled how to read a section, reword the information in his/her own words, and then write it down on a note card. In third grade it is important for us to model this skill and encourage it, however for some students they will find rewording the information challenging. Math: – This week in math we finished unit 5 which was all about multiplication and division. We also started our unit on fractions. Students explored different fractions by talking about how to share brownies and how to order them from smallest to largest. Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will continue to practice the strategy of asking questions while reading non-fiction. We will also have one FSA simulation.
