After reading a fable, students would work together to determine the lesson the author intended for the reader to learn from the fable. We read “Madame Rhinoceros and Her Dress.” Vocabulary: This week we learned the words ban, permit, valuable, tasks, unwind, and stressful from the articles we read about homework. Writing: This week in writing we used the mentor texts Cherries and Cherry Pits by Vera B. Williams and Julius, The Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes to look at how to develop characters through fiction stories. We worked to include sensory details to help a reader visualize characters. Students worked to show what characters are doing and saying through dialogue. Math: – This week in math we started a new unit called, “How many hundreds? How many miles?” In this unit students will work to subtract and add numbers up four digit numbers. We started this week by counting by hundreds into the thousands. Then students worked to complete many subtraction problems in sets. It is important for students to understand the relationship between 193 – 67 = ? And 293 – 67 = ? Students played a game called Capture from 300-600 to practice subtracting 3-digit numbers. Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will continue to practice determining the most important points of texts. Writing: Next week in writing students will continue working on fiction writing. Math: Next week in math we will continue to focus on adding and subtracting numbers into the hundreds. Homework: Monday: math page 17 Tuesday: math page 19 Z to A Countdown

They read “Homework – Who Needs It?”, “Smile – You’ve Got Homework!”, and Lifetimes. When reading there are many details included, however it is important to know how to “boil them down” to the most important ideas that the author wants a reader to understand. The is like summarizing the main ideas. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words comfy, successful, and unsuccessful from the book Sonia Sotomayor. Writing: This week in writing we started a new unit about writing fiction pieces. We started this unit by reading Tacky the Penguin, by Helen Lester. In this story Tacky is a funny main character who is also a talking penguin, which illustrates the fact that fiction is writing that is not real. We also discussed that some things in fiction can really happen, as in realistic fiction. We also read the book If You Were a Writing by Joan Lowery Nixon, which helped the students learn how a writing comes up with ideas for fiction. We practiced a technique called, “What if?” Asking questions to get fiction ideas started, like, “What if a monkey got loose from the zoo and ended up in my backyard?” Students practiced writing their own fiction pieces and conferred with partners to discuss their work. Math: – This week in math students worked to finish unit 6. Students explored the relationship between tables and graphs. Then they worked to compare and contrast information on two separate graphs or tables. Students have worked in this unit to understand constant rates of change and how they are represented in tables and graphs. On Friday students took a unit assessment. Next Week: Reading: Next week in reading we will continue to practice determining the most important points of texts. Writing: Next week in writing students will continue working on fiction writing. Math: Next week in math we will begin unit 8 which focuses on adding and subtracting numbers into the hundreds. Homework: Monday: math page 5 Tuesday: math page 7 Wednesday: math page 13 Thursday: math pages 17 Thank you for making us all feel so special during Teacher Appreciation Week. We are so grateful to work with such wonderful families.

We started our next unit which focuses on determining important ideas. The unit begins with reading opinion articles. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words intense, exhilarated, and astounding from the book Wilma Unlimited as well as the words unexpected, abandon, and industrious from the book Sonia Sotomayor. Students also worked to publish their favorite poems from the unit to help get ready for our Literary Showcase. Math: –This week in math we worked on understanding the power of patterns. Students were able to determine what the color of a specific item would be based on understanding the pattern. For example, if a pattern is repeating red, yellow, green, red, yellow, green, what color would the 35th item be? We also worked on constant rates of change over time with an imaginary world from Rhomaar. Children in Rhomaar receive Magic Marbles at night. Students were able to determine if a child started with a certain number of marbles and then received a consistent number of marbles each night, how many marbles the child would have after a certain number of nights.
