We have had wonderful first week of school in the 2/3 community. The students have established the procedures and routines for reading, writing, and math. We have had lunch both in the cafeteria and outside on the elementary patio. The students have had a chance to go to music, art, and PE as well. We ended the week with a pep rally supporting our PKY football team and cheerleaders. We appreciate your patience with us as we ensure that each child gets to their families at dismissal. Thank you so much for your help making this week a success.
Have a wonderful weekend! -3rd grade teachers Some dates to remember:
*This week: Reading – We established our reading community by learning how to listen to a text read aloud, discuss it with a partner, and even to share in class discussions. We used two anchor texts to begin our journey, Miss Nelson is Missing and Miss Nelson Has a Field Day. These related texts were fun and rich. Students also began to select their own texts for independent reading. We emphasized the importance of choosing books at the correct level for the students. Students will only become more accomplished readers if they spend a lot of time reading books at their level. A good test is a "five finger test:" read a page from the book, count each word on that page that is too difficult, if you reach more than five, put it away because it is still too hard. Writing – This week in writing we used two anchor texts to give us ideas for writing about people we know. The text were The Pain and the Great One by Judy Blume, Grandpa's Face by Eloise Greenfield. Students learned the procedures for writing silently and skipping lines while writing to allow for revision later on. We learned that good writers read a lot of good books to help get ideas. Math – We started our first investigation which focused on equal groups for multiplication. We’ve practiced talking about drawing pictures of things that come in groups of 2’s to 10’s, and made a class chart. Students have been focusing on writing multiplication equations that match their pictures and groups, and solving multiplication problems. Students are asked to do three steps every time they solve problems: Write an equation, show their work, and write their final answer. Continue helping our students to follow these steps. Next week: Reading – Next week we will look at making text to self connections to help us understand what we are reading. We will also look closely at illustrations to see how they can help us infer about what is happening in the stories we are reading. Writing – Next week we will explore different genres in writing such as memoir, poetry, and even non-fiction. Math – Next week we will continue to explore equal groups and story problems with a focus on multiples of 3, 5, 6, and 10. Welcome back! We are all looking forward to a wonderful school year. This week you will be receiving several forms:
