A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading: This week in reading we started to talk with students about the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment). We used two texts to read through and discuss the skills of sequence, main idea (central idea), cause and effect, and relationship between paragraphs. We are beginning to show students test questions to help them become familiar with the question style and vocabulary. We also continued to work on reading non-fiction expository texts and useing text features to help us learn more from the text. Vocabulary: This week we learned the words customary, energize, and appetizing from the book Morning Meals Around the World. Writing: In writing this week we worked to publish our opinion pieces. We studied strong endings, had pair conferences for students to support each other in revising and editing, and then worked to revise and edit our pieces. Students shared their pieces in the Author’s Chair. We also worked each day to practice a few skills questions in FSA format. Math: This week in math we explored multiplication through pictures. It is important that students can visualize the equal groups in a multiplication problem, which is why we spent time making pictures to represent multiplication problems. Students discovered how these pictures involve repeated addition which is the same thing as multiplication. Students learned how to write multiplication annotation and how it represents equal groups. We ended the week by exploring multiples of 2 on the hundreds chart. Understanding skip counting and multiples of numbers will be another important strategy for understanding and mastering multiplication. Next Week: Reading: Next week we will continue to look at text features in non-fiction texts. Writing: Next week in writing students will work through an opinion writing task. Math: Next week in math we will continue our focus on multiplication. Homework: Monday: math page 18 Tuesday: math page 21 Thursday: math page 24

--2/3 teachers This week - Reading – This week in reading we taught a mini-unit on test taking strategies. We are getting closer and closer to our state assessments, and want to begin teaching students how to read and comprehend reading assessments. It is almost like another genre. While students should still use the same reading strategies such as visualizing, wondering, and inferring, they must also understand the intent of questions and how to eliminate poor answer choices. Students must also be willing to go back into texts to find evidence for their answers. We will work through a sample test together to begin to show these strategies to students. Vocabulary – From the book Mailing May we learned the words permissible, impermissible, and adventuresome. Writing – This week in writing we continued to explore opinion writing. Students are working to organize their pieces with an introduction that states the author’s opinion right away. This is followed by a few paragraphs that give reasons and details why the opinion should be adopted by the reader. Finally, there should be a conclusion paragraph that restates the author’s opinion. We also began a few skills lessons on verbs, linking verbs, and verb tenses. Math – This week in math students explored the relationship between area and perimeter. Students also worked to find the perimeter and area of different figures, including their own foot. Next week - Reading – Next week students will begin a unit on using text features to better understand non-fiction texts. Writing – Next week we will continue working on several writing skills which will help us with our opinion writing. Math – Next week students will explore the characteristics of quadrilaterals and triangles. Homework – Monday: math page 39 Tuesday: math page 44 Thursday: math page 48 |
