This week: Reading – This week students practiced making inferences about the main character in the book The Paper Bag Princess. We talked about how all characters face problems and work to solve them. We learn about the characters by understanding their actions as they face and solve problems. Often an author gives us clues about a character through their actions and dialogue. When we understand a character well we can predict what he/she will do. This is the power of inferences. Vocabulary - We learned the words disaster, celebration, and retrieve from the book Aunt Flossie's Hats (and Crab Cakes Too!). We also learned the words unfortunate, fortunate, and immense from the book The Paper Bag Princess. Writing – This week students worked hard to publish and share their first pieces. You will see these later in the year when we have our Literary Celebration Party. Students worked to edit their pieces for complete sentences, punctuation, and spelling. Each child had a turn to read his/her piece in the “Author’s Chair.” This is an opportunity for other students to get ideas from each other and support each other’s efforts. Math – This week in math students learned how to make and interpret line plots. We discussed the terms mode, range, and outlier. Students also began an investigation about collecting and analyzing measurement data. For example, students all measured how long one of their feet is and we talked about the class data and what it means. Next week - Reading – Next week students will make character webs to help them make inferences. Writing – Next week we will have a few more skills lessons focused on nouns, adjectives, and pronouns. Math – Next week students will begin our next unit on addition and subtraction strategies using 3-digit numbers. Homework: Monday – math page 54, Tuesday – math page 56, Wednesday – math page 57, Thursday – math page 2
