This Week: Reading - This week in reading we continued to discuss Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The students used “Think Pair Share” to answer questions about key details and important ideas in the story and referred to the story to support their thinking. The students also made text-to-self connections to enjoy and understand the story. During independent reading the students practiced making text-to-self connections to their own stories. Vocabulary – This week the students learned terrible, terrific, grumble, and scrunch from Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. We also reviewed the words accompany, annoy, convince, eavesdrop, and swirl from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students read and sorted words with r-controlled vowels (ar, or, er, ir, and ur). The students also learned the procedure for playing “Build That Word”. Writing – This week in writing the students continued to explore generating ideas for writing by creating a list of sentences. After listening to the story Click, Clack, Moo, the students wrote more silly animal sentences and chose their favorite to begin to write a silly animal story. The students also listened to My Sister Ate One Hare and used this story to inspire them to write My Little Sister or Brother sentences. The students chose their favorite sentence to write a My Little Sister or Brother story. We all had a good giggle. J Finally, on Friday the students learned and practiced identifying nouns in sentences and determining if they are a person, place or thing. Math - This week in math the students finished Unit 1. The students showed their understanding of solving both addition and subtraction story problems. The students also demonstrated their fluency with plus 1, plus 2, and Make 10 combinations. Unit 2 focuses on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes as well as symmetry. This week the students explored the features of 3-dimensional shapes, particularly the number and shape of the faces. Finally, the students began to practice the subtraction facts associated with plus 1, plus 2, and Make 10 combinations. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to practice making text-to-self connections with the story The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall. Word Study- Next week the students will read and sort words with the spellings oo, ew, ou, and ow. Writing – Next week the students will list scary words and try to write a scary story. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore 3-dimensional shapes. Homework To Be Sent Home: Friday, October 7th - wkbk p.13 Continue To Practice:
