2nd Grade Weekly Newsletter
Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
It has been another busy week in the 2/3 community!
Writing – In writing this week the students reviewed the strategies they learned in Unit 1 to generate ideas for writing a story. Students drew, made lists, or wrote sentences to generate an idea for a story. The students shared their stories with the class. We continued to build our writing community by listening respectfully to the thinking of others. Using the prompts “I found out…” and/ or “I liked your story because…”, the students expressed interest in and appreciation for one another’s writing. Math - In math this week the students began their exploration of fractions. The students solved story problems in which they had to partition single objects represented by 2-dimensional shapes into equal halves. The students also used various Geoblocks to continue their exploration that halves can be equal size, but different shapes. Their exploration continued by folding a square piece of paper in different ways to make halves and fourths. Finally, the students colored rectangles divided into thirds. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with the story, A Tree is Nice and begin to learn new vocabulary words from this story. Word Study- Next week the students will learn strategies to alphabetize letters and words. Writing – Next week the students will explore how to tell more in a story by adding temporal words and details. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore fractions.

Wow! We had an amazing week in the 2/3 community!
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice making connections (text- to- self and/or text- to-text) to their own texts during independent reading. The students also listened to and discussed the story The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. The students compared this story to The Three Little Pigs that they worked on last week. Vocabulary – This week the students played word detective by identifying vocabulary words from past stories during their independent reading. The kids have had a lot of fun discovering vocabulary words we have discussed in their own texts. Word Study- In word study this week the students read and sorted words with –ing. The students discovered that when adding –ing to a base word the number of consonants have to be changed to keep a short vowel. For example, hop to hopping, run to running, skip to skipping. Using this strategy, the students were guided through spelling to practice writing words with the –ing ending. Writing – In writing this week the students listened to Harry and the Terrible Whatzit and created a list of spooky words and sentences. Working with a partner, the students talked about stories that they could write using their spooky sentences as inspiration. Math - In math this week the students continued to explore rectangles. The students made rectangles on geoboards and drew them paying attention to the length of the sides. The students used color tiles to discover that several different rectangles could be made with the same number of tiles and practiced describing their creations by the number of rows and columns. The students also used the tiles to identify right angles. This led the students to discover that rectangles have four sides and four right angles. We also discussed that rectangles with four right angles and four equal sides are special and mathematicians call these rectangles squares. Next Week: Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with the story, A Tree is Nice and begin learn vocabulary from The Three Little Wolves and the Big, Bad Pig. Word Study- Next week the students will read and sort words with the ending –ed. Writing – Next week the students will continue to add sensory details to their stories and share their stories with the class. Math – Next week the students will learn how to divide rectangles into equal parts. What an amazing week in the 2/3 community!
This Week: Reading - This week in reading the students listened to The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig and discussed the story’s message with their partners. The students answered questions to understand key details and important ideas from the story. The students compared The Three Little Pigs with The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig using text to text connections. During independent reading the students continued to practice making text to self, and/or text to text connections with their books. Vocabulary – This week the students reviewed the words gobble and rude. They also learned dash and approach from The Three Little Pigs. Finally, we continued to review the words annoy, fearless, grumble, terrible, and terrific from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students read and sorted words with the spellings au, aw, oi, and oy. The students played “Build That Word” and practice guided spelling. Writing – This week in writing the students continued to write stories based on their silly animal sentences and their little brother/little sister sentences. The students reviewed that a noun is a person, place, or thing. The students also learned how to make a noun plural by adding –s or –es and that some nouns are irregular such as mouse/mice, goose/geese, sheep/sheep, and deer/deer. Math - This week in math the students learned how to sort 2-dimensional shapes by the number of sides in each shape. Then using colored tiles, the students discovered that 2-dimensional shapes with 4 sides and 4 right angles are called quadrilaterals. Using these same colored tiles, the students also ordered a variety of rectangles in order from smallest to biggest. Finally, the students created their own rectangles and described them using rows and columns. Their partners tried to recreate the rectangles using these descriptions. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will learn new vocabulary words from The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Word Study- Next week the students will read and sort words with the ending –ing. Writing – Next week the students will continue to review the strategies they have learned from this unit. Math – Next week the students will create rectangles from geoboards.. Continue To Practice:
It has been another busy week in the 2/3 Community!
This Week: Reading - This week in reading we continued to discuss Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The students used “Think Pair Share” to answer questions about key details and important ideas in the story and referred to the story to support their thinking. The students also made text-to-self connections to enjoy and understand the story. During independent reading the students practiced making text-to-self connections to their own stories. Vocabulary – This week the students learned terrible, terrific, grumble, and scrunch from Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. We also reviewed the words accompany, annoy, convince, eavesdrop, and swirl from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students read and sorted words with oo, ou, ow, and ew. The students also practiced spelling words with r-controlled vowels (er, ir, ur, ar, and or). Writing – This week in writing the students continued to explore generating ideas for writing by creating a list of sentences. After listening to the story Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers and Click, Clack, Moo, the students wrote more silly animal sentences and chose their favorite to begin to write a silly animal story. The students also listened to My Sister Ate One Hare and used this story to inspire them to write My Little Sister or Brother sentences. Math - This week in math the students began Unit 2. Unit 2 focuses on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and their attributes. This week the students explored the features of 3-dimensional shapes, particularly the number and shape of the faces and the number of vertices by playing “Find the Block”, “Mystery Block”, and drawing geoblocks and geoblock constructions. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to practice making text-to-self connections with the story The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall. Word Study- Next week the students will read and sort words with the spellings oi, oy, au, and aw. Writing – Next week the students will write stories from their silly sentneces. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore 3-dimensional shapes. Continue To Practice:
