2nd Grade Weekly Newsletter
Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students began Unit 4 which focuses on making inferences. Using the book Babu’s Song, the students made inferences to understand characters’ motivations and actions. The students answered questions to understand key details and important ideas in the story. The students used the discussion prompts: “I agree with _____ because…”, “I disagree with _____ because …”, and “In addition to what ____ said, I think …” to build on one another’s thinking during class discussion. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students practiced the words routine, expert, fade and flap from The Paperboy. The students also continued to review the words expand, necessary, shimmer, stream, and vanish from previously read stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students practiced spelling words with the suffix –ly. The students also read words with the suffixes –er, -ist, and –or and learned how these suffixes changed the meanings of base words. Writing –This week in writing the students shared their writing with the class from the Author’s Chair. The students gave positive feedback to each other by using the prompts: “I liked your story because …..” and “From your story I learned … “. Math- This week in math the students continued to work with adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers within 100. The students also practiced working with numbers to 100 by playing Close to 20, Get to 100, and Collect $1.00. After Winter Holiday: Reading – When we return the students will learn the vocabulary words from Babu’s Song. Word Study- When we return from break the students will read and sort words with the suffixes –less and –ful. Writing – After the break the students will begin a new unit on writing fiction. Math – After the break the students will explore place solving story problems with unknown changes.

Barberville Pioneer Settlement permission slips and chaperone forms will be sent home Monday, December 11th. All forms and chaperone ticket money are due by Friday, December 15th. Permission slips, chaperone forms, and chaperone ticket money will not be accepted after December 15th. Wednesday, December 13th- Friday, December 15th Early Release at 12:30 Winter Holiday begins Monday, December 18th and ends Tuesday, January 2nd School Resumes Wednesday, January 3rd Friday, January 19th- 2/3 Community Fieldtrip to Barberville Pioneer Settlement This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice visualizing to make sense of a text using the story The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey. The students informally used their schema and made inferences as they visualized to understand the character and events of the story. During independent reading the students continued to practice visualizing with their own texts and shared their visualizations with their partners and the class. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned routine and expert from The Paperboy. The students also reviewed the words expand, necessary, shimmer, stream, and vanish from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students practiced spelling words with the suffixes –er and –est. The students also learned strategies for reading and sorting words with the suffix –ly. Writing – In writing this week the students practiced conferring with their partners. The students practiced giving feedback to each other in helpful ways after listening their partner reread their story. Then they asked each other questions about their stories. Through these questions the students were able to determine what they could tell more about in their stories. Finally, the students began to share their writing in the Author’s Chair. Math- This week in math the students continued to practice strategies for adding number strings and comparing the total to 20 by playing the game Close to 20 and to play the game Get to 100 which involves adding multiples of 5 and 10. The students also continued to practice strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers. Finally, the students learned how to play the game Collect $1.00.

Friday, December 8th – 2/3 Community Fieldtrip to Lowry Park Zoo- Information will be coming home on Monday, December 4th about this trip. Please check their folders. In this story a paperboy and his dog enjoy the quiet of the early morning as they deliver their newspapers. The students informally used their schema and made inferences as they visualized to understand the character and events of the story. During independent reading the students continued to practice visualizing with their own texts and shared their visualizations with their partners and the class. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned the words shimmer, vanish, expand and stream from the story Pop! A Story About Bubbles. The students also reviewed the words behave, discover, misbehave, racket, and shelter from previously read stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students learned how to read and sort words with the suffixes –er and –est. The students played “Build That Word” with a partner to practice building words with the suffixes –er or –est based on sentences read allowed in class. Finally, the students took a spelling test to assess their ability to spell words with consonant –le syllables. Writing – This week in writing the students practiced thinking and talking about story ideas before they write. The students listened to and discussed the story “Let’s Get a Pup!” Said Kate. The students each wrote about a pet. The students reread their writing to different partners to get ideas for how to incorporate our reading vocabulary into their story and to tell more about their pets. This collaboration helped the students to practice listening respectfully to the thinking of others and share their own. Math- This week in math the students learned strategies for adding number strings and comparing the total to 20 by playing the game Close to 20. By playing this game the students practiced the facts that make 10, the double facts and near doubles facts. The students also learned and practiced strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers. Finally, the students learned to play the game Get to 100 which involves adding multiples of 5 and 10. Next Week: Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with the story The Paperboy and begin to learn new vocabulary words from the story. Word Study- Next week the students will continue to practice strategies to help them to read and spell words with the suffixes –er, -est, and –ly. Writing – Next week the students will continue to confer with their partners to tell more in their stories. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore adding up to 100 and taking the strategies they have learned and applying them to money by adding coin collections up to $1.00. |
