This book gives a simple introduction to bones and muscles and how they work. The students used the back of the book summary and a diagram to locate key information in an expository nonfiction book. The students then traced their hands and labeled it. During independent reading the students identified text features in their own texts and discussed what they learned from these features with a partner. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned the words variety, characteristic, consume, and unwelcome from Snails. The students also reviewed the words dull, mushy, picky, slurp, and solid from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students continued to explore poetry. The students listened to the poems “Tree House” and “Boa Constrictor” by Shel Silverstein to give them inspiration to try writing their own poems. The students listened to “The Coyote” and “The Tiger” for inspiration for writing animal poems. The students wrote poems about summer after listening to “Knoxville, Tennessee”. Finally, the students wrote poems about food after listening to “Lettuce” and “Peaches”. Writing –In writing this week the students explored writing persuasively after listening to and discussing the stories I Wanna Iguana and I Wanna New Room. In each story Alex tries to persuade his parents for a pet iguana and a new room. The students had fun writing their own letters of persuasion. Finally, the students listened to and discussed the articles “An Argument for Pets: Good for the Animals” and “An Argument Against Pets: Pets Cost Too Much”. The students discussed the author’s purpose for writing these articles and wrote their own opinion piece about the topic. Math- In math this week the students continued to review the concept of even and odd numbers by investigating what happens with partners and teams when two groups are combined. Through this investigation the students made and tested conjectures about adding even and odd numbers. The students discovered the following rules: even + even = even; odd + odd = even; odd + even = odd; and even + odd = odd. Next Week: Reading – In reading next week the students will continue exploring nonfiction texts and using text features to improve their comprehension using the book Bend and Stretch: Learning About Your Bones and Muscles. Word Study- In word work next week the students will continue to practice writing poetry. Writing – In writing next week the students will continue to practice writing opinion pieces. Z to A Countdown
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
Reminder From Administration A reminder that the top parking lot is not a drop off zone for students. We have had many close calls of accidents involving students and other cars and we want to keep everyone safe. Please use the traffic circle to drop your child off in the morning. Officer Boone will begin patrolling the top parking lot soon as a reminder to our families to use the traffic circle. Parents who work with Morning Mile need to check in with Mr. Garrett to make sure you have the parking pass. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students wondered about the book Snail and identified what they learned. The students used the table of contents, chapter titles, photographs, labels, bold words, the glossary, and index to locate key information. Through class discussion the students answered questions about key details in the book. The students also identified the main purpose of the book also known as the author’s purpose. Finally, the students read independently for 20 minutes and continued to identify and share their wonderings and new learnings with their partners. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned dull, solid, mushy, and slurp from Spinning Spiders. The students reviewed the words attract, fragile, gleam, sip, and teamwork from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned about writing friendly letters. The students learned that a letter is divided into the date, heading, body, and closing. The students even practiced adding commas to the heading and closing of a variety of letters. Finally, the students wrote friendly letters to their teacher and their friends in class. Writing –In writing this week the students practiced skills focusing on reflexive pronouns ( myself, ourselves), using commas in letters following the heading and closing, and writing compound sentences. The students also began the next unit on opinion writing and explored writing persuasively by listening to and discussing the story I Wanna Iguana. Math- In math this week the students explored fractions. The students explored the different ways to divide a square into fourths by thinking about how they would want to cut a sandwich into 4 equal pieces. The students showed their creativity by coloring the regions of different rectangles divided into halves, thirds, and fourths then identifying the fraction of the region and the corresponding color. The students also discovered that by coloring more regions of the rectangle with the same color the corresponding fraction would have to change. For example, 2/3, 3/4, etc. Finally, the students explored how to divide a group of objects evenly between three or four people even if it meant cutting one of the objects into halves, thirds, or fourths. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading we will be learning the new vocabulary words from Snails. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will be exploring poetry.
