Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students continued to practice using wondering to understand narrative nonfiction texts using the book The Art Lesson written by Tomie dePaola. The students identified what they learned about the character and the author and used visualizations to make text-to-self connections. The students then continued to practice these skills during their independent reading. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students reviewed the words occasionally, encourage, disapprove, approve, fetch, guide, murmur, overjoyed, and sturdy from previously read stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students practiced spelling high frequency words and learned to read and sort words with the suffixes –ment and –ness. Writing – This week in writing the students continued to listen to and discuss nonfiction using the book Paper. The students explored the table of contents, bold print on the vocabulary words, the glossary, headings, and the index. The students wrote their observations, facts and questions about the various types and features of paper. Math-This week in math the students worked with activities to familiarize themselves with the 100s chart. The students found and used patterns in the sequence of numbers. The students moved up and down the chart adding and subtracting multiples of 10. Finally, the students learned to play the game Roll-a-Square where the students used connecting cubes to fill a 100s chart. Each of these activities helps them to develop fluency with the sequence of numbers from 1 to 100. When we return from Spring Break. Reading – The students will continue to practice using wonderings to understand their reading. Word Study- The students will continue to practice spelling high frequency words and using strategies to read multi-syllable words. Writing – The students will learn about possessive pronouns and write questions and information about polar lands. Math – The students will be adding to and subtracting from 100. Homework Next Week: Wednesday, March 29th- workbook pgs. 49-50 Please continue to practice:

--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice using wondering to understand their fiction and nonfiction texts during independent reading. The students also discovered that they were making text-to-self connections, visualizing, and making inferences about their characters to develop their wonderings. We discussed how active readers use different strategies to think about their reading. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned occasionally, encourage, disapprove, and approve from Beatrix Potter. The students also reviewed the words fetch, guide, murmur, sturdy, and overjoyed from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned how to spell irregular words such as almost, and idea. These words contain sounds that do not follow the typical rules. The students also learned strategies for reading and sorting words with multiple syllables. Writing – In writing this week the students learned about subject and object pronouns. The students also continued to explore nonfiction by listening to and discussing the book How to Be A Friend. The students related this book to the friendship between Kate and Pippin and to their own friendships. The students then imagined a new student coming into our class and wrote their own versions of how to be a friend. Finally, the students explored different types of paper and wrote descriptions of lined writing paper, construction paper, wax paper, tissue paper, wrapping paper, and newspaper. The students then played a guessing game by reading their descriptions of a type of paper and having the class guess which paper they were writing about. Math- In math this week the students continued to develop efficient methods for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers. Through class discussion the students were able to describe multiple strategies that could be used such as keeping one number whole, using strips and singles, adding the tens and ones, using a number line, pocket chart, or linking cubes. The students also became more familiar with the 100s chart by filling in missing numbers and playing Guess My Number. Next Week: Reading – In reading next week the students will continue to use wondering to understand narrative fiction. Word Study- In word study next week the students will learn how to spell high frequency words and learn about the suffixes –ment and –ness. Writing – In writing next week the students will be continuing their exploration of nonfiction by reading a story and doing experiments with paper. Math – In math next week the students will continue familiarizing themselves with the 100s chart. Homework Next Week: Tuesday, March 14th- workbook pgs 25-26 Thursday, March 16th-workbook pgs 35-36 Please continue to practice:

--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students listened to and discussed The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The students made inferences about the characters and used wonderings to make sense of the text. The students also listened to and discussed a narrative nonfiction book about Beatrix Potter. The students explored the differences between fiction and nonfiction texts and identified what they learned from the narrative nonfiction book. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned host, hospitality, gratitude, and overjoyed from The Paper Crane. The students also reviewed the words chaos, notorious, expert, fearful, and eavesdropper from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word work the students learned to read words with the schwa sound such as about, ago, and around. The students also learned about the suffixes –tion, -sion, and –ion. The students learned strategies to read and sort words with these suffixes. Writing – This week in writing the students began to explore nonfiction by listening to and discussing the book Kate and Pippin. This is a true story about an unlikely friendship between a dog named Kate and a young fawn named Pippin. The students use wonderings to help them to better understand the text. The students also used interview questions to learn more about their partners. Using the answers to these questions, the students wrote a narrative nonfiction story about their partners. Math- This week in math the students continued to explore and work with patterns both with colors such as AB, ABC, AABBC, and or ABCD color trains and patterns with numbers. Through these patterns the students practiced counting by 2s, 3s, and 5s. The students will begin unit 6 on Friday which revisits using strategies to solve story problems with 2-digit numbers. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading the students will continue to read and discuss Beatrix Potter. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will learn strategies for reading and spelling words with irregular spellings. Writing – Next week the students will continue to explore narrative nonfiction. Math – Next week in math the students will continue their exploration of story problems with 2-digit numbers. Homework Next Week: Tuesday, March 6th-workbook pgs. 10-11 Thursday, March 9th- workbook pgs 19-20 Please continue to practice:
