--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice visualizing to make sense of a text using the story The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey. The students informally used their schema and made inferences as they visualized to understand the character and events of the story. During independent reading the students continued to practice visualizing with their own texts and shared their visualizations with their partners and the class. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned routine, expert, fade and flap from The Paperboy. The students also reviewed the words expand, necessary, shimmer, stream, and vanish from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students practiced spelling words with the suffixes –er and –est. The students also learned strategies for reading and sorting words with the suffix –ly. Writing – In writing this week the students practiced conferring with their partners. The students practiced giving feedback to each other in helpful ways after listening their partner reread their story. Then they asked each other questions about their stories. Through these questions the students were able to determine what they could tell more about in their stories. Finally, the students began to share their writing in the Author’s Chair. Math- In math this week the students used the concept of partners and teams to explore odd and even numbers. The students work with partners daily and often have to readjust partners if students are absent from school. The students were quick to recognize that even numbers always allow everyone to have a partner and for even teams. When there is an odd number someone is without a partner and has to make a group of three or can be a judge/referee when working with teams. The students used the 100’s chart to see patterns with even and odd numbers. Even numbers end with 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0 and odd numbers end with 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Finally, the students discovered how to count by 2’s to 40 by counting the number of legs or hands in the classroom. Next Week: Reading – Next week the will begin learning how to make inferences to better understand the characters in the stories they are reading. Word Study- Next week the students will spell words with the suffix –ly and read and sort words with the suffixes –er, -ist, and –or. Writing – Next week the students will continue to share their stories in the Author’s chair. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore the patterns when counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students continued to practice visualizing to make sense of a text using the story The Paperboy by Dav Pilkey. In this story a paperboy and his dog enjoy the quiet of the early morning as they deliver their newspapers. The students informally used their schema and made inferences as they visualized to understand the character and events of the story. During independent reading the students continued to practice visualizing with their own texts and shared their visualizations with their partners and the class. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned the words shimmer, vanish, expand and stream from the story Pop! A Story About Bubbles. The students also reviewed the words behave, discover, misbehave, racket, and shelter from previously read stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students learned how to read and sort words with the suffixes –er and –est. Finally, the students took a spelling test to assess their ability to spell words with consonant –le syllables. Writing – This week in writing the students analyzed how authors tell more about their characters using the stories Sheila Rae the Brave and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The students worked with partners to develop story ideas and ideas about a character that they would include in their story. The students learned how to confer with their partner and, by asking each other questions, use each other’s feedback to tell more in their stories. Finally, the students learned how to identify action verbs and linking verbs. Math- This week in math the students learned strategies for solving addition and subtraction story problems with an unknown change. For example, Kira had 13 balloons. Some of the balloons floated away. Now she has 7 balloons. How many balloons floated away? The students learned how to play the game “Cover Up” which has the students cover up counters so that their partner can determine how many counters are missing. Finally, the students ended the week by exploring how a number of students can be divided into pairs or teams. This is the beginning of our exploration into even and odd numbers.
