--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students used the story Chester’s Way to continue practicing making inferences to understand character’s feelings, motivations, and actions. The story is about Chester and Wilson who are best friends and they share the same way of doing things, until one day, Lily moves into the neighborhood. The students answered questions to understand key details and important ideas in a story and used examples from the story to support their thinking. The students continued practicing these skills during independent reading. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned the words miniature and rarely from Chester’s Way. The students also reviewed the words embarrass, fade, grip, huddle, and prepare from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students learned how to read and sort words with the prefix un-. The students explored synonyms and practiced spelling words with suffixes and prefixes. Writing –This week in writing the students continued to explore fiction writing. After listening to the beginning of Bear Dream the students created their own ending to the story by writing about what they thought the Great Bear’s secret could be. After finishing the story, the students wrote a creative story that would end with the character realizing that it had all been a dream. We finished the week by reading the story Ducky which describes the adventures of a rubber ducky that fell off a ship in the middle of the ocean. The students used this story to inspire them to write about an adventure a toy of their choosing may have. Math- This week in math the students continued to discover ways to order, represent and interpret data. This week the students explored using line plots to show the number of pockets students were wearing in class and the number of teeth students in our class had lost. The students also discovered how to make a plan for collecting data, making predictions about the data, and collecting and recording data from a survey by asking the other students in 2nd grade about how many teeth they have lost. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading the students will continue to learn vocabulary words from Chester’s Way and practice making inferences about the characters in their texts. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will learn to read and sort words with the prefix re-. Writing – Next week in writing the students will learn about irregular verbs and will choose a story to take through the editing process. Math – Next week in math the students will compare data represented in a line plot. Homework Will Be Sent Home: Tuesday, January 31st -workbook page 29 Please Continue To Practice:

--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students took the Gates-McGinitie Reading Test. This is a typical standardized reading test where students are given test booklets, teachers read directions, and students are given a specified amount of time to complete the items. The second grade test measures students’ phonics, sight word, and comprehension skills. Again, this is a nationally normed test that allows us to compare individual students to a sample of thousands of typical second grade students. Students are considered to be “on grade level” if they score the same or better than 39 out of every 100 second grade students who took the same test at the same time of the year (i.e., 39th percentile). Finally, we ended the week by reading the story Erandi’s Braids. In this story Erandi hopes for a new dress for her birthday, but when her mother finds holes in their fishing net, Erandi wonders how they will get the money for the things they need. The students made inferences to help them to understand the characters’ motivations and actions. The students also used the discussion prompts “I agree with ____ because…”, “I disagree with _____ because …”, and “In addition to what _____ said, I think ….” to build on one another’s thinking during class discussions when they answered questions to understand key details and important ideas in the story. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students worked to identify words from previous stories during their independent reading time. Word Study-This week in word study the students spelled words with the suffixes –less and –full. The students explored using suffixes to help them read two- and three-syllable words. Finally, the students learned how to read morphemic transformations. Morphemic transformations are when the students read a series of words as the teacher changes affixes (prefixes and suffixes) one at a time. This activity reinforces the students’ understanding that many words are composed of base words and affixes, and that the addition of affixes can transform a word’s meaning. This activity also demonstrates how pronunciation and spelling sometimes change with the addition of affixes. Writing –This week in writing the students focused on mini-lessons of grammar, usage, and mechanic skills that supplement our writing instruction. This week the students learned about using dialogue in their writing and the correct way to use quotation marks. The students also learned how to use collective nouns to name a group. For example, geese, sheep, deer, children, etc. The students also discovered that verbs can be written to show action that is happening right now and in the past. Finally, the students were given a spelling measurement called Fox in the Box Spelling to measure their increasing use of correct spelling conventions (e.g., th, ch, tr, sp, ing, ed, ay). Math- This week in math the students began the first investigation in unit four which focuses on data analysis. The students discovered how to group data into categories based on similar attributes. The students explored how they could sort the same set of data in different ways. The students learned how to represent a set of data sorted into categories. Finally, the students had fun playing “Guess My Rule” where the students sorted data into categories and their partner had to guess what rule they were using to sort their data. Next Week: Reading – Next week the students will continue working with the story Erandi’s Braids. Word Study- Next week the students will learn about the prefix –un and discuss synonyms. Writing – Next week the students will the students will continue to focus on grammar by learning about future-tense verbs and subject-verb agreement. Math – Next week the students will continue to explore how to sort data into categories and represent their data. Homework Will Be Sent Home: Thursday, January 19th- workbook page 13, students play “Guess My Rule” with two rules. Please Continue To Practice:

--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice making inferences to understand a characters’ motivations and actions with the story Erandi’s Braids. The students answer questions to understand key details and important ideas in the story to help them explore the story’s structure, including character and plot. The students also continued to practice using the prompts: “I agree with _____ because….”, “I disagree with ______ because …..”, and “In addition to what ______ said, I think …” to build on one another’s thinking during class discussions. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned the meaning of stuff, tourist, collect, and sniffle from the story Babu’s Song. The students also reviewed the words expert, fade, flap, routine, and vanish from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned the meaning of the suffixes –less and –ful and how these suffixes can change the meaning of a base word. The students read and sorted words with the suffixes –ing, -less, and –ful. Finally, the students took a spelling test on words ending with the suffixes –er, -ist, and –or. Writing –In writing this week the students explored fiction writing using the books Dogzilla, Brave Charlotte, and Honk! The Story of a Prima Swanerina. The students learned that interesting things happen to characters in fiction and that they can use descriptive language to tell more in their stories. The students began writing a story about a unique animal such as the characters in the stories we explored this week. Math- In math this week the students continued to practice counting by groups of 2s, 5s, and 10s. The students also explored place value of 2-digit numbers by learning to recognize that the first digit of a 2-digit number designates the number of groups of 10 (the 10s place) and the second digit designates the number of ones (the 1s place). The students revisited near doubles combinations and began to develop their fluency with plus 10 combinations by focusing on the patterns of adding 10 to any number. Finally, the students explored the use of a place-value model to represent the number of 10s and 1s. The students used base 10 blocks and stickers in sets of 10 (also called strips) and individual stickers (or singles). Next Week: Reading – Next week the students will continue working with the story Erandi’s Braids. Word Study- Next week the students will continue working with words with the suffixes –less and –ful.
