Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to work on wondering to better understand their stories. The students listened to and discussed the story The Paper Crane. The students also continued to practice wondering during independent reading. The students shared their wonderings with their partners. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned fetch, murmur, sturdy, and guide from the story Galimoto. The students also reviewed duplicate, genius, miniature, rarely, and stunned from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned strategies for dividing two and three syllable words. If a two syllable word has only one consonant, such as detail or retell, the students learned to divide the words before the consonant, de-tail, re-tell. Using this strategy, the students practiced reading, sorting, and spelling multi-syllable words. Writing –In writing this week the students have finished rewriting and illustrated their stories. The students also began sharing their stories on the Author’s Chair. Math- In math this week the students learned how to recognize number patterns in tables by counting by 2s, 3s, 5, and 6s. The students also explored how to cover different pattern blocks in a variety of ways with other pattern blocks. Finally, the students continued their exploration of recognizing and predicting ABAB and ABCABC patterns by making color trains with unifix cubes and predicting which colors would be next. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading the students will learn the vocabulary for The Paper Crane and begin the next unit which focuses on wondering. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will learn about the schwa sound. Writing – Next week the students will be learning how to write nonfiction stories. Math – Next week in math the students will continue their exploration of patterns. Homework Next Week: Tuesday, February 28th- workbook p. 51 Please continue to practice:

A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students practiced wondering about stories during their independent reading time and noticing which part of their books caused them to wonder. The students are now reading both nonfiction and fiction texts. At the end of independent reading time the students share their wonderings with their partners and refer to the stories to support their thinking. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned stunned, genius, chaos and notorious from The Incredible Paintings of Felix Clousseau. The students also reviewed the words convince, disguise, grip, huddle, and prepare from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students continued to practice spelling words with the prefix re-. The students learned about open and closed syllables. Open syllables end with a vowel and the vowel sound is usually long, such as re, bi, etc. Closed syllables end with a consonant and the vowel sound is usually short, such as pin, nic, etc. By determining if a syllable is open or closed, students are able to break apart and decode longer multi-syllable words. Writing –This week in writing the students learned how to recognize and correctly punctuate declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences. The students also continued to proofread their writing pieces by checking for spelling using their sight word lists and spelling combinations charts. Finally, the students began the process of rewriting their stories Math- This week in math the students completed the assessment for Unit 4. This assessment consists of multiple components and was split up between multiple days. On this assessment the students created a line plot to show the number of books read in an imaginary class. The students then wrote down two things they noticed from the data on the line plot. Then the students interpreted a line plot from another class and answered questions. The students then compared the line plots from the two classes and wrote down two things they noticed. Finally, the students completed a venn diagram organizing a list of animals based on two rule that they created. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading the students will continue to practice wondering with the story Galimoto. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will learn strategies for spelling compound words. Writing – Next week the students will complete their stories and share them with the class. Math – Next week in math the students will be starting Unit 5 which focuses on ratios, patterns and number sequences. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students began Unit 5 which focuses on using wondering to understand fiction. The students continued to make inferences and referred to the story to support their thinking. The students considered the points of view of different characters in the story and discussed the story’s message. The students read and discussed the story The Incredible Paintings of Felix Clousseau to practice these skills. During IDR the students used wondering to help them comprehend the stories they read independently. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned the words miniature, rarely, duplicate, and disguise from Chester’s Way. The students also reviewed the words embarrass, fade, grip, huddle, and prepare from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned how to read and sort words with the prefix re- along with other suffixes and prefixes learned in previous lessons. The students also practiced strategies to spell words with the prefix un-. Writing –In writing this week the students learned about irregular past tense verbs such as go-went, say-said, etc. The students also reviewed their fiction drafts and selected one to finish, proofread, and publish. The students worked with their partners to determine things that they wanted to know more about. Through these conversations, the students were able to tell more by adding details to the characters and actions in their stories. Using the story Ducky, the students worked on adding descriptive words to their stories. Finally, they finished the week by correcting any punctuation and capitalization errors they might find. Math- In math this week the students continued to work with the teeth data they collected from the other 2nd grade classes last Friday. The students developed a line plot for one of the classes and then compared our class data to the other 2nd grade class. The students then practiced describing the data through class discussions and written assignments. We finished the week by looking at teeth data from four mystery classes and representing the data with line plots. Next Week: Reading – In reading next week the students will continue to practice wondering to comprehend fiction. Word Study- In words study next week the students will learn about open and closed syllables. Writing – In writing next week the students will learn about the different types of sentences and continue to proofread their pieces. Math – The students will complete the assessment for Unit 4 which will focus on interpreting a bar graph, creating and comparing line plots, and grouping data in a venn diagram. We will be breaking this assessment up over a few days. No Homework for math will be sent home next week. Please continue to practice:
