This Week: Reading - In reading this week the students continued to practice making text-to-self connections using Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. During independent reading the students practiced using self-monitoring skills to ensure they have chosen a just right book. The students asked themselves: What is happening in my book? Can I understand what I am reading? Can I read most of the words? Teachers conferenced with the students to help them self-monitor their reading. Vocabulary – This week the students learned eavesdrop, eavesdropper, accompany, and annoy from Jamaica Tag Along. The students also reviewed the words familiar, glare, hurl, overalls, and pester from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students reviewed the spellings of the long e sound. The students read and sorted words with e-e, ea, ee, e, and y. The students learned that two words that sound the same but have different meanings are called homophones. (Ex. meet, meat; here, hear; seen, scene; and beat, beet). Finally, the students learned a strategy for spelling words that end with y. Writing – In writing this week the students focused on the skills necessary for writing good sentences. The students learned that a complete sentence has two parts: who or what (the subject) and what happens (the predicate). When a sentence is missing one of the two parts it is incomplete. The students also learned how to use apostrophes to make a contraction. Last week the students listened to the story, Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers, as an inspiration for writing silly sentences to get inspiration for a story. The students wrote their own silly sentences about animals using contractions such as don’t or can’t. Finally, the students wrote a story to a prompt, “Tell about a time that you were happy”, as a beginning of the year writing sample. We will be sharing these stories with you during parent conferences next month. Math - In math this week the students developed strategies for solving addition and subtraction story problems. The students practiced the following steps: 1. Read the problems and imagine what is happening in your head; 2. Solve the problem and check your solution; 3. Show how you solved the problem; 4. Write an equation that represents what is happening in the problem. The students also continued to develop their fluency with plus 1, plus 2, and make 10 combinations. Finally, the students listened to the story Two of Everything: A Chinese Folktale. In this story a couple places different items into a magic doubling pot and when the item comes out there are two of them. This story helped the students visualize how numbers can double. The students will continue to develop their fluency with doubles up to 10. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day focusing on key details and new vocabulary words. Word Study- Next week the students will be reading and sorting words with r-controlled vowels (er, ir, ur, ar, and or). Writing – Next week the students will continue to write stories using silly animal sentences. Math – Next week the students will finish Unit 1 and begin Unit 2 which focuses on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and their attributes. Homework To Be Sent Home: Monday, September 26th- wkbk p. 60 Wednesday, September 28th- practice subtraction facts related to plus 1, plus 2, and make 10 combinations Thursday, September 29th-wkbk p. 2 Continue To Practice:
We have had an amazing week in the 2/3 community!
This Week: Reading - This week in reading the students continued to practice making text-to–self connections using the story Jamaica Tag Along. The students answered questions to understand key details and important ideas in a story. The students used “Think Pair Share” to discuss the story’s message with their partners. Finally, during independent reading the students were introduced to the skill of self-monitoring. The students are learning how to monitor if a book is “Just Right” for them. As the students are reading independently they ask themselves three questions: What is happening in my book? Can I understand what I am reading? Can I read most of the words? If the students are able to answer these, questions then the book is “Just Right”. If they are unable to answer any of these questions, they should choose another book. The expectation is that students are able to read quietly for up to 15 minutes. Vocabulary – This week the students learned hurl, pester, glare, and overalls from Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings. We also reviewed compassionate, content, familiar, fearful, and fearless from previous stories. Word Work- This week in word work the students reviewed the spellings of the long i and long u sounds. Finally, the students practiced working in a responsible way while completing three rotations during independent work: writing, reading, and word work. Writing – This week in writing the students continued to make lists to generate ideas for writing. Last Friday, the students wrote lists of their friends after hearing the story Miss Tizzy. The students wrote a story about one of the friends on their list. Using “Think Pair Share”, the students shared their ideas and their writing with their partners. The students are using approximated spelling in their writing during this first unit, thinking about the sounds that make up a word. The students then added “seeing” and “hearing” words to their stories. On Thursday, the students presented their stories to the class. We practiced sharing our stories with a level 3 voice. listening respectfully to the thinking of others, as well as expressing interest in and appreciation for one another’s writing. Finally, the students listened to the story Dogs Don’t Wear Sneakers, to discover how authors write sentences to generate writing ideas. Math - This week in math the students continued to develop their fluency with Make 10, Plus 1 and Plus 2 combinations. The students played the games “Tens Go Fish” and “Make 10”. If they wanted to challenge themselves they played, “More Than Two to Make 10”. In this game the students can choose 3, 4, or even 5 addends to make 10. The students also worked with a partner to practice flash cards for Plus 1 and Plus 2 combinations as well as ten frames. The students also developed strategies for showing their thinking as they solved both addition and subtraction story problems. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will learn the vocabulary words from Jamaica Tag Along.
