Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice visualizing to make sense of text using the story Pop! A Book about Bubbles! The students use their schema, or background knowledge, informally to make inferences as they visualize. During independent reading the students continued to practice making connections and visualizations to their dot level texts. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students reviewed the words behave, misbehave, racket, and discover from the poem “Raccoon”. The students also reviewed the words necessary, numerous, recreation, shelter, and usual from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students continued to practice using the spelling strategy to spell one and two syllable words that end with consonant –le. At the end of the week the students learned about the purpose and procedure for taking a spelling test. Writing – In writing this week the students practiced thinking and talking about a story to get ideas before they write using the story “Let’s Get a Pup!” Said Kate. The students wrote about a pet and a character of their own choosing. Working with their partners, the students reread their writing and gave each other suggestions for telling more. This week the students also learned how to use commas in a series and practiced this skill in their stories about a pet. Math- In math this week the students discovered strategies to solve both addition and subtraction story problems with totals of 45. The students explored how to visualize, retell and model what was happening in a story problem and how to use equations to record their work. The students also began to understand how addition and subtraction story problems are related. Finally, the students discovered strategies for solving problems with missing addends, or problems containing an unknown change. For example, Kira had a bunch of 8 balloons. Sally gave her some more balloons. Then Kira had 11 balloons. How many balloons did Sally give to Kira? The students played the game Cover Up to help them develop the skill of solving problems with an unknown change. After Thanksgiving Break: Reading – Next week the students will learn new vocabulary word from the story Pop! A Book about Bubbles! Word Study- Next week the students will learn how to read and sort words ending with suffixes –er and –est. The students will also continue to practice spelling words with consonant –le syllables. Writing – Next week the students will continue practicing tell more and using commas in a series in their writing about a character of their choice. The students will also explore verbs in sentences. Math – The students will continue working with both addition and subtraction story problems, as well as, investigating even and odd numbers. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students continued to practice visualizing to understand a text by sharing the drawings they made after hearing the poem Racoon. The students shared what part of the poem inspired their drawings. The students also explored how the rhythm of the poem impacts their comprehension of the text. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned behave, misbehave, racket and discover from the poem Racoon. The students also reviewed necessary, numerous, recreation, shelter, and usual from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students learned how to use a dictionary. Using the alphabetizing skills from the lessons last week, the students practiced looking up words in the dictionary by using key words. The students continued to practice alphabetizing words by reading and sorting words with their partners. Finally, the students learned and practiced a spelling strategy to help them learn how to spell new words. Writing – This week in writing the students worked with a partner to tell more about the things they liked. The students shared their stories with the class in the Author’s Chair. Using the prompts “I liked your story because _____” and “I found out_____”, the students provided each other with positive feedback after hearing one another’s writing pieces. Finally, the students wrote about what they were thankful for and illustrated them. Math - This week in math the students continued to develop their strategies for adding three or more numbers by looking for combinations that make 10, doubles, and/or near doubles combinations. The students played “Make 10”, “10s Go Fish”, “Double Arrays”, and “Double It” to continue to develop fluency with these combinations. The students also learned how to play “Get to 20” to practice number strings. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to practice using visualizations to make sense of text. Word Study- Next week the students will learn how to read and sort words ending with –le. Writing – Next week the students will learn how to use commas in a list and continue to explore how to tell more in their writing and write a story about a pet. Math – Next week the students will learn and practice strategies for solving both addition and subtraction story problems. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice visualizing with the poems “Bees Bothering Bears Behaving Badly” and “The Racoon”. The students also drew pictures of their visualizations of “The Racoon”. During independent reading the students continued to practice making text-to-self and text-to-text connections. Vocabulary – This week the students reviewed words from previous stories by completing a crossword puzzle and searching for vocabulary words in their independent reading texts. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned how to alphabetize words. The students sorted letter tiles, alphabetized a list of words and lined up in the classroom in alphabetical order. The students discovered that if more than one word begins with the same letter we need to look at the next letter in the word. When we lined up in alphabetical order the students had to look at the third letter in the names of two students to figure out who was first. Writing – In writing this week the students created lists of things they like and dislike after listening to the story I Will Never NOT EVER Eat A Tomato. The students then used their connections to the story to write a story about their own experiences. The students shared their stories with their friends and discovered how authors can hear and talk about stories to generate ideas for their own writing. Math - In math this week the students discovered that reordering three addends results in the same total. The students used combinations to make 10 and doubles combinations to help them to add two or more numbers. Finally, the students explored how near doubles and doubles combinations are related. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to practice using visualizations to make sense of text. Word Study- Next week the students will continue to explore alphabetizing words. Writing – Next week the students will learn how to use commas in a list and continue to explore how to tell more in their writing. Math – Next week the students will play games to become more fluent when adding near doubles combinations and number strings.
