Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.

Reminder From Administration A reminder that the top parking lot is not a drop off zone for students. We have had many close calls of accidents involving students and other cars and we want to keep everyone safe. Please use the traffic circle to drop your child off in the morning. Officer Boone will begin patrolling the top parking lot soon as a reminder to our families to use the traffic circle. Parents who work with Morning Mile need to check in with Mr. Garrett to make sure you have the parking pass. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students continued to identify what they learned from an expository nonfiction book Spinning Spiders. After listening to and discussing a section of the book, the students used wonderings to help them understand the book and to focus their attention for the next section of the book. The students explored text features and how the author used them to help them to understand the book. During independent reading the students identified new learnings and wonderings to share with their partners each day. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students practiced the words fragile, sip, picky, and attract from Butterfly. The students also continued to review the words damp, disapprove, hospitality, occasionally, and regularly from previously read stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students listened to and discussed the story Max’s Words. This is a story about Max who wants to start a collection like his brother’s stamps and coins, and he decides to collect words. The students used their word work notebooks to find words to fit different categories similar to Max’s collection. The students used their strategies to read polysyllabic words. Finally, the students explored how to create calligrams. Writing –This week in writing the student finished publishing their nonfiction pieces about the polar lands. The students worked with the teacher during individual conferences to determine what nonfiction text features they wanted to include in their piece. The students shared their stories during the Author’s Chair on Friday. Math- This week in math the students began Unit 7 which focuses on fractions. The students learned about halves and fourths, and how to write ½ and ¼. The students also practiced splitting objects and groups evenly including geoblocks, 2 dimensional shapes, and paper. The students also helped to split groups of pennies, balloons, and picnic foods into equal shares. Next Week: Reading – In reading next week the students will continue exploring nonfiction texts and using wondering to improve their comprehension using the book Spiders. Word Study- In word work next week the students will learn about writing letters. Writing – In writing next week the students will be focusing on skill practice and begin unit 7 on opinion writing. Math – In math next week the students will continue to explore fractions. Homework Next Week: Wednesday, May 3rd-workbook pages 27-20 Please continue to practice:

Using this nonfiction book, the students identified what they learned and what they still wondered about. The students explored the text features of this expository nonfiction book as well. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students began to learn the vocabulary words fragile and sip from Butterflies. The students also reviewed the words damp, disapprove, hospitality, occasionally, and regularly from previously read stories. The students will learn the remaining new vocabulary words next week. Word Study- In word study this week the students practiced spelling high frequency words with contractions such as can’t, I’m, don’t and doesn’t. The students also reviewed reading and sorting words with multiple affixes such as unsuccessfully or unenjoyable. Writing – In writing this week the students worked on rewriting their nonfiction pieces. The students also added text features such as photographs, captions, and glossaries. The students will share their published pieces during our Literary Showcase. Math- In math this week the students discovered how to use a place value model to represent and compare the hundreds, tens and ones in three digit numbers. The students expanded the strips and singles they had been using with two digit numbers to include flats for the hundreds in three digit numbers. The students practiced counting by 100s to 1000 and discovered strategies for adding and subtracting 10 or 100 from a given number and describing what part of the number changes. Finally the students practiced writing three digit numbers in standard and expanded form. Next Week: Reading – In reading next week the students will continue exploring nonfiction texts and using wondering to improve their comprehension using the book Spiders. Word Study- In word study next week the students will practice spelling words from the story Max’s Words. Writing – Next week in writing the students will begin Unit 5 which focuses on letter writing. Math – Next week in math the students will begin Unit 7 which focuses on fractions. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students identified what they learned from the expository nonfiction story Insect Detective. The students used wonderings to help them to understand the text. The students also explored the text features presented in this nonfiction story. Finally, the students continued to practice wondering about their own texts during independent reading. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned teamwork, damp, regularly and gleam from Insect Detective. The students also reviewed the words accompany, create, fabulous, predict, and insist from previous stories. Word Study- This week the students continued to practice spelling high frequency words with irregular spellings. The students also practiced using the strategy of morphemic transformations to read longer words. Writing – This week in writing the students reviewed their nonfiction writing about the polar lands, animals and people and selected a piece to complete and publish. The students conferred with each other to determine what more they wanted to know about one another’s writing and added to their selected drafts. The students then worked with each other to add descriptive language to their writing. Finally, the students proofread their nonfiction pieces for spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Math- This week in math the students reviewed how to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s to and past 100. The students examined the patterns they noticed when skip counted. The students also practiced adding 10 and subtracting 10 from a given number up to 200. The students learned how to play “Guess My Rule” with the 200 chart as well. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading the students will continue exploring nonfiction texts and using wondering to improve their comprehension. Word Study- Next week in word study the students will practice spelling high frequency words with contractions. Writing – Next week in writing the students will continue preparing their nonfiction piece for publication. Math – Next week in math the students will begin Unit 7 which focuses on fractions. Homework Next Week: Monday, April 14th- finish filling in 200 charts Tuesday, April 15th -workbook page 77 Please continue to practice:

The students learned another game to help them to develop the skills of subtracting from 100 by playing “Spend a $1.00”. The students exchange coins and by rolling dice they work their way down to 0 cents. The students also continued to play “Unroll a Square” and “Get to 100. Finally, the students started to develop their skills of thinking of the structure of 100 in terms of groups of 5 and 10. Next Week: Reading – Next week in reading we will be covering the same lessons with the students who were in session 1 of RADkids. Word Study- Next week in word study we will be covering the same lessons with the students who were in session 1 of RADkids. Writing – Next week in writing the students will be selecting one of their nonfiction pieces to publish. Math – Next week in math the students will begin applying the strategies they have learned for adding and subtracting 5 and 10 to and from 100 to numbers up to 200. --2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students wondered about their books during independent reading. The students then shared their wonderings with their partners and the rest of the class and referred to their books to support their thinking. The students contributed ideas to build onto one another’s thinking. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students learned the words insist, create, predict, and fabulous from The Art Lesson. The students also reviewed the words approve, encourage, gratitude, host, and overjoyed from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students practiced spelling words with irregular spellings. The students also reviewed strategies for reading and sorting two, three, and four syllable words. Writing – In writing this week the students learned that a possessive pronoun is a noun that shows belonging. The students also listened to and discussed a nonfiction book The Polar Lands. The students listed the information they learned from the book after using discussion prompts to build on one another’s thinking. The students then used the information they learned from the book to write their own piece about the polar lands. Math- In math this week the students continued to work with the 100s chart. The students visualized making jumps of multiples of 5s and 10s on the 100s chart to develop the strategy of adding multiples of 5s and 10s up to 100. The students also added coin combinations to make $1.00 and determine the amount of change someone could receive when spending up to $1.00. Finally, the students learned to play the game Unroll-a-Square to practice subtracting amounts from 100. Next Week: Reading – In reading the students will identify what they learn from expository nonfiction books. Word Study- In word study the students will continue to spell high frequency words with irregular spellings and learn the suffixes –able and –ible. Writing – In writing the students will continue to read and write about the polar lands by focusing on the animals and the region. Math – In math the students will continue adding to and subtracting from numbers to 100 in multiples of 5 and 10. Homework Next Week: Monday, April 3rd –workbook pgs. 55-56 Thursday, April 5th- workbook pgs. 67-68 Please continue to practice:
