Wow! It was a very busy week in the 2/3 community. Homecoming week was a huge success! Thank you for all of your help with supporting the dress up days, dime wars, and the homecoming parade.
2nd Grade Teachers J This Week: Reading - In reading this week the students continued to practice making text-to-self connections using Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. During independent reading the students practiced using self-monitoring skills to ensure they have chosen a just right book. The students asked themselves: What is happening in my book? Can I understand what I am reading? Can I read most of the words? Teachers conferenced with the students to help them self-monitor their reading. Vocabulary – This week the students learned eavesdrop, eavesdropper, accompany, and annoy from Jamaica Tag Along. The students also reviewed the words familiar, glare, hurl, overalls, and pester from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned how to read, sort and spell words with r controlled vowels such as er, ir, ur, ar, and or. The students also learned how to play a new game called “Build that Word” in which the students use letter tiles to spell words with r controlled vowels called out by the teacher. Writing – In writing this week the students continued to practice using lists to get inspiration for their writing. The students listened to and discussed the story Miss Tizzy. In this story the author describes the friendship between Miss Tizzy and the children and the fun activities they do each day. The students made their own list of friends and chose one friend to write about. The students used descriptive words to describe their friend, how they met and what they like to do together. The students shared their writing on Friday and used the prompt “I found out…” to comment on each other’s writing. Math - In math this week the students continued to develop strategies for solving addition and subtraction story problems. The students played games to practice counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Finally, the students continued to practice telling time the half hour on an analog clock. Next Week: Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day focusing on key details and new vocabulary words. Word Study- Next week the students will be learning strategies for reading compound words and for spelling homophones. Writing – Next week the students will write silly sentences about animals. Math – Next week the students will finish Unit 1 and begin Unit 2 which focuses on 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and their attributes. Continue to Practice:
