Then using colored tiles, the students discovered that 2-dimensional shapes with 4 sides and 4 right angles are called quadrilaterals. Using these same colored tiles, the students also ordered a variety of rectangles in order from smallest to biggest. Finally, the students created their own rectangles and described them using rows and columns. Their partners tried to recreate the rectangles using these descriptions. 2nd Grade Teachers J This Week: Reading - In reading this week the students continued to practice making text-to-self connections using Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. During independent reading the students practiced using self-monitoring skills to ensure they have chosen a just right book. The students asked themselves: What is happening in my book? Vocabulary – This week the students learned eavesdrop, eavesdropper, accompany, and annoy from Jamaica Tag Along. The students also reviewed the words familiar, glare, hurl, overalls, and pester from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students learned how to read, sort and spell words with r controlled vowels such as er, ir, ur, ar, and or. The students also learned how to play a new game called “Build that Word” in which the students use letter tiles to spell words with r controlled vowels called out by the teacher. Writing – In writing this week the students continued to practice using lists to get inspiration for their writing. The students listened to and discussed the story Miss Tizzy. In this story the author describes the friendship between Miss Tizzy and the children and the fun activities they do each day. This Week: Reading - This week in reading the students continued to practice making text-to–self connections using the story Jamaica Tag Along. The students answered questions to understand key details and important ideas in a story. The students used “Think Pair Share” to discuss the story’s message with their partners. Finally, during independent reading the students were introduced to the skill of self-monitoring. The students are learning how to monitor if a book is “Just Right” for them. As the students are reading independently they ask themselves three questions: What is happening in my book? Can I understand what I am reading? Can I read most of the words? If the students are able to answer these, questions then the book is “Just Right”. The expectation is that students are able to read quietly for up to 20 minutes. Vocabulary – This week the students learned hurl, pester, glare, and overalls from Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings. We also reviewed compassionate, content, familiar, fearful, and fearless from previous stories. Word Work- This week in word work the students reviewed the spellings of the long e sound. Book Clubs started for all of our students. Each student is placed into a book club to meet their individual needs as a reader. Finally, the students practiced working in a responsible way while completing three rotations during independent work: writing, reading, and word work. Writing –This week in writing the students learned how authors can add descriptive words to help the reader imagine what is happening in a story. The students listened to the story Night in the Country for inspiration. The students then practiced adding “seeing” and “hearing” words to one of their own stories. The students also continued using the strategy of making lists to get inspiration for a story. Finally, the students learned that a complete sentence has two parts: who and what happens. The students practiced writing complete sentences and correcting incomplete sentences. The students also reviewed beginning a sentence with a capital letter and end a sentence with a period. Math - This week in math the students learned and practiced the patterns counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. The students discovered that the first digit of a 2-digit number designates the number of 10s and the second digit designates the number of 1s. Using this understanding, the students developed strategies for solving problems about 10s and 1s. The students also practiced solving comparison story problems by determining if there is enough of something for a group of people. (For example, a picnic basket contains 30 sandwiches for 24 people. Will there be enough? Will there be any extras? Do you need more? How many more?) The students practiced identifying and using coin equivalencies by combining coins to a total of 50 cents. Finally, the students continued to develop fluency with addition and subtraction within 20. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will learn the vocabulary words from Jamaica Tag Along. Word Work- Next the students will read, spell, and sort words with the long u sound. Writing – Next week the students will continue to practice using lists as a strategy for inspiring their writing. We have had a busy week in the 2/3 Community. Flu Shot information and permission forms were sent home on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. The CDC is recommending that the flu shot be used instead of the flu mist so that it is more effective against the flu virus. If you would like for your child to participate in this program, please indicate on the permission slip. If you would prefer to have your pediatrician administer the flu vaccine, please mark no on the permission slip. The teachers must keep track of who is/is not participating. Please return the permission slips as soon as possible. We appreciate your help with this. Finally, a book order form from Scholastic was sent home in your child’s folder on Friday. This is a fun way to provide interesting books for reading at home. For each book ordered our community earns points for free books that we can put into our 2/3 library, order classroom sets of books for student book clubs, and provide a free book for each child that reads 1,000 minutes on their reading journals which will begin after our Elementary open house. The Scholastic website is https://clubs.scholastic.com/ Our code is GQQN8. Thank you again for your support. Officer Boone will begin patrolling the top parking lot soon as a reminder to our families to use the traffic circle. Parents who work with Morning Mile need to check in with Mr. Garrett to make sure you have the parking pass. |
