It has been another busy week in the 2/3 community!
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice making connections (text- to- self and/or text- to-text) to their own texts during independent reading. The students completed unit 1 by learning the new vocabulary words from The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig. Finally, the students started Unit 2 on Friday. During this unit, the students visualize to make sense of various types of text. The students informally use their schema and make inferences as they visualize. The students explored this skill using the story, A Tree is Nice. Vocabulary – This week the students reviewed the words gobble and rude. They also learned dash and approach from The Three Little Pigs. Finally, we continued to review the words annoy, fearless, grumble, terrible, and terrific from previous stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students read and sorted words with –ing. The students discovered that when adding –ing to a base word the number of consonants have to be changed to keep a short vowel. For example, hop to hopping, run to running, skip to skipping. Using this strategy, the students were guided through spelling to practice writing words with the –ing ending. Writing – In writing this week the students reviewed the strategies they learned in Unit 1 to generate ideas for writing a story. Students drew, made lists, or wrote sentences to generate an idea for a story. The students shared their stories with the class. We continued to build our writing community by listening respectfully to the thinking of others. Using the prompts “I found out…” and/ or “I liked your story because…”, the students expressed interest in and appreciation for one another’s writing. Finally, on Friday the students began Unit 2 and discovered how to tell more in their stories by using temporal words such as first, next, then, and finally. Math - In math this week the students continued to explore rectangles. The students made rectangles on geoboards and drew them paying attention to the length of the sides. The students used color tiles to discover that several different rectangles could be made with the same number of tiles and practiced describing their creations by the number of rows and columns. Finally, the students discovered that different sized rectangles make up the faces on rectangular prisms and cubes. Finally, they learned how to identify rectangles that are similar sizes after tracing the faces on a rectangular prism. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to work with the story, A Tree is Nice and begin to learn new vocabulary words from this story.
