Wow! What a week in the 2/3 community!
--2/3 teachers This Week: Reading – This week in reading the students explored how to visualize a character in a story using the poem, My Baby Brother. The students drew pictures of the character based on their mental image after hearing and discussing the poem. Finally, the students continued to make text-to-self and text-to-text connections to their independent reading books. Vocabulary – This week in vocabulary the students learned the meaning of the words numerous, recreation, shelter and necessary from the story, A Tree is Nice. The students also reviewed the meaning of the words eavesdropper, plenty, rude, fragrant, and unusual from previous stories. Word Study- This week in word study the students learned about alphabetizing by listening to the book “AlphaOops!” read aloud. The students practiced alphabetizing a list of letters and words with their partners. Writing – This week in writing the students practiced telling more in their stories by adding details and temporal words such as first, next, finally, etc. The students shared their stories with their partners while they visualized what was happening in the story. Using the prompts, “I found out….” and “I like your story because…”, the students provided feedback and shared their partners thinking with the class. Finally, the students learned the difference between common and proper nouns and how to correctly write them in a sentence. Math - This week in math the students continued to explore fractions. The students discovered that objects can be divided into thirds and fourths. The students realized that objects can be divided into equal parts in multiple ways. Finally, the students began to develop the understanding that parts of objects could be similar and result in fractions such as 2/3, 2/4 or 1/2, and 3/4. Next Week : Reading – Next week the students will continue to practice using visualizations to make sense of text. Word Study- Next week the students will continue to explore and practice alphabetizing words. Writing – Next week the students will continue to explore using temporal words and descriptive language in their writing. Math – Next week the students will explore 2-digit numbers and discover strategies for adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.
