Each newsletter describes what your child has been learning in school, what they will be learning the following week, and homework assignments your child will be receiving.
A few dates to remember as we look forward to next week.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! This Week: Reading – In reading this week the students continued to practice visualizing to make sense of text using the story Pop! A Book about Bubbles! The students use their schema, or background knowledge, informally to make inferences as they visualize. During independent reading the students continued to practice making connections and visualizations to their dot level texts. Vocabulary – In vocabulary this week the students reviewed the words behave, misbehave, racket, and discover from the poem “Raccoon”. The students also reviewed the words necessary, numerous, recreation, shelter, and usual from previously read stories. Word Study- In word study this week the students continued to practice using the spelling strategy to spell one and two syllable words that end with consonant –le. At the end of the week the students learned about the purpose and procedure for taking a spelling test. Writing – In writing this week the students practiced thinking and talking about a story to get ideas before they write using the story I Will Never, Not EVER, Eat a Tomato!. The students wrote stories about things and foods they like or dislike. Working with their partners, the students reread their writing and gave each other suggestions for telling more. This week the students also learned how to use commas in a series and practiced this skill in their stories about their favorite colors, animals, and things to do. Finally, the students wrote about what they are thankful for. Math- In math this week the students the students continued to practice using a variety of strategies to add and subtract 2-digit numbers. The students used a place value model, 100s grids, linking cubes, 100s charts, and place value blocks. During workshops the students played Roll A Square, found as many combinations of a 2-digit number as possible, as well as completing addition and subtraction story problems. After Thanksgiving Break: Reading – Next week the students will learn new vocabulary word from the story Pop! A Book about Bubbles! Word Study- Next week the students will learn how to read and sort words ending with suffixes –er and –est. The students will also continue to practice spelling words with consonant –le syllables. Writing – Next week the students will continue practicing tell more and using commas in a series in their writing about a pet. Math – The students will continue to develop and practice strategies for adding and subtracting within 100.
